2 Differences And 2 Similarities Between A Registered And A Certified Dental Assistant Student

By:

Most people think that a registered dental assistant (RDA) and a certified dental assistant (CDA) are the same, and being a registered or a certified dental assistant is also the same thing. However, the fact is that there are some differences as well as some similarities in the two programs.

Following are the two differences between a RDA and a CDA.

Difference in the Degree Awarded

An RDA is known to be a dental technician that has graduated from an American Dental Association (ADA) recognized university or school, while CDA is regarded as a Certified dental assistant that has completed his certification after attending and passing a dental assistance program.

Passing Requirements

For becoming an RDA it is important that a student should graduate from an ADA recognized university and pass another written and clinical exam afterwards. The clinical exam for an RDA is conducted by the state dental board; however CDA does not need to give an additional exam, it is totally optional for him. He can receive his certification without it as well, all he has to do is to attend and pass a dental assistance program.

However, in some states there is a condition that all the dental assistants should be registered. Therefore if you are planning to be a CDA, then you would have some sort of restrictions in some states, until or unless you become an RDA.

These are the only differences between a registered and a certified dental assistant. In some states both of them are the same.

Following are the two similarities between a registered and a certified dental assistant:

Training & Job Description

The training and knowledge imparted to RDAs and CDAs is similar, they even require the same skill set to carry out their daily tasks as a dental assistant efficiently and effectively. This is because their job description is absolutely similar. In most states, both RDAs and CDAs are regarded as the same thing.

Job Security

Both RDA and CDA enjoy the same job security. However sometimes RDA's are preferred over CDA but this happen is very rare cases.
There is just a minor difference between a registered dental assistant and a certified dental assistant. In most states they are regarded as the same and in few of them they require a CDA to be registered as well! But one thing is for sure! Whether you want to be a CDA or RDA, you will surely be having a strong career with good pay and 100% job security.
