New York City is the crossroads of the planet. It heads that short and special list of World Cities. London, Paris, Rome are all wonderful. There is only one New York. The city is a global hub of commerce and fashion, entertainment, food, tourism, sports, education, and the arts all of them. New Yorks Broadway is the most famous theater district in the world and it seems that every waiter, in every restaurant is an aspiring actor.

The Big Apple began life as New Amsterdam with the establishment of a settlement on Governors Island in 1624. A year later, defenses were built on the lower tip of Manhattan Island (the Battery). Manhattan was named after the Manhasset Indians. Dutchman Peter Minuit made the settlement on the Island legal in 1625 with the creation of a deed which the Manhasset didnt understand and the island really was bought for $24 worth of trinkets and beads. A studio apartment in downtown Manhattan rent for over $3,000 today.

It was the site of major Revolutionary War battles and riots, the nations first Capitol and George Washington took his oath of office there as the first President of the United States.

The city is made up of five boroughs: Manhattan, The Bronx (formerly the farm of Dutchman Johannes Bronx), Queens, Staten Island (aka Richmond) and Brooklyn. Brooklyn is itself an icon. For decades, it was the home of large Italian and Jewish populations, and when it was incorporated into New York in 1898, it was the 4th largest city in the country. Brooklyn still maintains a unique culture and identity, as do its neighborhoods. New York neighborhoods are centers of the arts, music and ethnic culture. Greenwich Village, Tribeca and Soho, Flatbush and others are recognized everywhere.

New Yorks subway system is the largest transit system in the world and certainly the most complex. New Yorkers take particular delight in watching out-of-towners gazing in fascination or horror, at the route maps posted in every station. Contrary to popular myth New Yorkers will help any traveler. Even transit veterans get lost on the subway.

New York is the home of top-shelf dinning. The very finest of every cuisine will be found from one end of the city to the other; and the restaurants are at the forefront of American Fusion cooking. Its a major home to the arts with world-class museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art (known as Moma), the Brooklyn Museum, and the Guggenheim (Frank Lloyd Wrights Ice cream cone), and Lincoln Center and the world famous Julliard School. The Metropolitan Opera, The New York City Ballet and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra are hallmarks of classical culture. There is something on, everywhere, always and New York truly is the city that never sleeps.

The city is itself an icon of the American experience and its the home dozens more. The Empire State Building, 5th Avenue and Central Park & Zoo, Times Square, The Bronx Zoo and Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and the Aquarium draw millions of visitors each year. In New York harbor, the Statue of Liberty has been the beacon of hope for millions who came to our shores, passing through Ellis Island.

New York is a major sports town and the home of champions and legends. The NY Rangers and the Knicks (Knickerbockers) are at Madison Square Garden; The NFL NY Giants play in New Jersey, but thats a minor detail, the Mets play beneath the roar of jets taking off from NYs LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy Airports and the loved and often hated New York Yankees, the icon of the American sport baseball. New York fans are famous for their loves and hates. Even today, you will meet New Yorkers whove never forgiven the Dodgers for moving from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, or the Giants for leaving for San Francisco.

New York is unique. There is nothing like it anywhere. It is the subject of songs, Broadway shows, books and movies. It is the best and worst of absolutely everything and in quantities that people find hard to deal with. New York is an overload of wealth and glamour, culture and cooking and history.
