A surgical technician is a professional whose job is to assist surgeons and nurses during the course of an operation. There are some things you should consider when you decide to take this career path. The most important ones are as follows.

1.Surgical technician requires some basic education like all professions and it lasts from one to two years. This education comprises of certificate programs, diploma programs and associate programs. An associate degree in surgical technology takes two years to complete while certificate program lasts only a year.

2.The choice of degree to opt for depends on the individual. If you are already working in healthcare field and want to become a surgical technician then you can take a certificate degree but if you are a novice then it is better to take an associate degree. It takes two years to complete but once you get the degree, you can have a better paying job.

3.Another thing to keep in mind is that you should enroll in a school which is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

4.After you have completed your basic education, you have to pass a national certification exam in order to start working as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST). However, this certificate is issued for four years and you have to renew the certificate after every four years. So you have to be well informed of latest technologies in the field in order to keep your license as CST.

5.The course requirements for this profession include anatomy, surgical patient care, microbiology, medical terminology, surgical pharmacology, general and special surgical procedures and clinical pathology.

6.Once you graduate and pass you certification exam, you are required to complete a clinical residency in order to gain a first-hand experience. The more you are experienced; more are the chances of getting a well paid job.

7.Job description and requirements may vary as they depend on the hospital/clinic you work in but they usually include overseeing the cleaning and sterilization of operation rooms and medical equipment, preparing a patient for surgery like cleaning and disinfecting the surgery site, helping in dressings, taking care of specimens and transportation of patient to and from the operation room.

8.Technicians should be patient and tolerant as surgical procedures are time consuming.

9.They should be attentive, focused and pro-active to follow the instructions quickly.

10.Be prepared to work hard.
