10 Things To Remember When Opening A Business

By:

When it comes to opening up a business, there are some key things to keep in mind. While the motivation and ideas may be intact, there are other things that are equally important. In fact, without all of these factors in place, your business won't have a chance to succeed. Some statistics tell us that 80% of all new businesses will fail within the first five years. While this is a stark reality, it doesn't have to be a reality for you and your business. By following some simple guidelines, you should be able to have a success story.

1) Money - When starting a business, one thing that you can't have enough of is money. Sometimes people think that they can start a business on a good "idea" and it will work itself out. However, just about everything is going to cost money. You shouldn't even consider starting your business if you don't have enough money for basic essentials such as attorney fees, advertising, equipment, rent, etc. It's quite possible that you can get someone to invest in your business, but make sure it's all done with legal documents so you won't have problems later. Also, don't forget to file for a government grant to open your new business. Keeping your money organized by an accountant for tax purposes is also very important.

2) Support - Another important factor when starting a business is having a strong support team. It's not enough to have people who wish you well. You need people around you to provide you with a network of strong support. That means people in the community who are willing to back you up, business people who will tell others about your business and friends and family who will give you a hand. Also, you need people who will encourage you when things get rough. Starting a new business adventure is exciting, but it's not always easy or fun.

3) Laws/Lawyer - You need to make sure you know the laws about starting a new business. You can find many things on the internet that can help you. Also, the government can send you brochures with lots of information and important tax documents. Also, to avoid problems down the road, it's a good idea to hire a lawyer to look over your documents and give you direction. While the advice of a well-meaning friend may help, only an attorney can give you information that you can trust to be accurate.

4) Location - An important aspect of opening a new business is the location and building. Perhaps you can find a place that is not very expensive and in plain sight. Many people open businesses in their home and then move later. That will work, as long as you have the room and can separate your business and home expenses for tax purposes. Choosing a good location can be very important by allowing your business to be easily seen and accessed.

5) Advertising - Enough can't be said about the importance of advertising. While word-of-mouth is certainly important, getting your name out into the community through advertisements is also important. Newspaper ads, radio announcements, fliers, and emails through your website are all ways that you can advertise. Advertising costs money, but it's the only way to let people know you are in business.

6) Equipment - You will need good, sound office equipment to keep things running smoothly. A good computer system, printer and copy machine are necessities. Also, having good software that will help you stay organized is important in order to keep good records and keep track of inventory.

7) Perseverance - You will need lots of patience as your business takes off. No business grows over night, so plan on sticking it out for the long haul. While you can expect to get discouraged, don't be afraid to contact your support people for advice and encouragement during these times.

8) Plan - What is your long-term plan? Where do you want to see your business one year from now? Two years from now? Five to ten years? It's a question that you need to ask so that you can tell rather or not you are making the progress about which you have dreamed.

9) Common sense - While many people start businesses on a wing and a prayer, it's important to use common sense. A business can't run on good intentions or a happy feeling. There needs to be well-written rules and a code of ethics for everything you do and stand for within your business.

10) Flexibility - Last, but not least, plan to be flexible. If you try something and it doesn't work, don't be afraid to change. If one form of advertising doesn't work, it may be time to try another. If your days and hours of operation are not bringing in business, consider changing things. Flexibility will help you from getting and staying in a rut.

Starting a business is not easy. However, it's worth all of the beginning problems to see it take off and become successful. With some basic skills and a network of supporters, along with much determination, you should see your business booming in no time!
