*Patient Contact: You can prepare and lead patients for examination, monitor and measure their vital signs, and explain the instructions as given by the doctor. If required you can also read out test results over the phone, but do not draw any conclusions, just read.

Don'ts

*Invasive Procedure: While you can collect blood through veins, do not collect blood from arteries. Also you must not do any test that requires you penetrate the tissues. This can be done by a medical professional only.

*Interpretation: Under no circumstances should you analyze a test result, or conclude anything. Nor must you give any advice to the patient or remark on their condition.

*Prescription: Do not prescribe any medicines to the patients, no matter how common. Also be careful not take medicine refills for granted. Law requires a medical professional to authorize a prescription.

Many states might have additional restrictions or might allow more leeway to a medical assistant. It is best for you to have everything clearly outlined in your job description.
