"plants Vs. Zombies": A Heated Tower Defense

One of the oldest yet simplest game types out there is the tower defense genre. This one is a sub-genre of the strategy games arena wherein the mechanics require the player to utilize limited resources in order to defend a particular site from persistent bouts of attacks. A fine example of a tower defense game is the "Crystal Defenders." It is a part of the core gameplay of "Defense of the Ancients" and a product of a collaboration between Square-Enix and Namco. But there is another game from the same genre that has been making quite a buzz for some time now: "Plants vs. Zombies."

What "Plants vs. Zombies" offers audience is basically the same as other games of this genre. It has a similar gameplay, and the options and resources available should be familiar to veteran players of the tower defense genre. Nonetheless, it doesn't mean that it fails to bring something new to the table. For one, it eliminates the usually complicated mazes and juggling. Players are also allowed to customize options at certain points, which is the most appealing.

In essence, the core of the gameplay does not necessarily stray far from the original. Even the options and resources available are not exactly unheard of to the old timers of the tower defense genre. But then again, that is not to say that the game does not really bring something new to the table. As a matter of fact, it has eliminated two common features namely mazes and juggling because of their supposed difficulty. "Plants vs. Zombies" has also added more customization options, which provides the player with an extraordinary selection, without actually increasing the things he can deploy.

One of the things that lure in players even at first sight is the design of the plants. Each plant shows its own "personality" through the design. Take for instance the sturdy, stubborn gaze of the Tall-nut plant and how it cries, and the subtle humor of the Squash and its basic function of "squashing" zombies. The humor and personality of the game definitely add color to the game.

"Plants vs. Zombies" may not appeal to everyone, especially to the hardcore strategy gamers who are hungry for more horrified and morbid graphics. But then again, you shouldn't wonder why this "cutesy" game made it big.

"Plants vs. Zombies" is clearly a game designed for casual gamers, like most of the tower defense archetype. Yes, it has a lot more options, but more hardcore strategy players will want their hands on titles like "StarCraft II" or something. While the zombies are still zombies, their design leaves them just as "cutesy" as the plants, which is liable to turn off the people who like their undead horrifying, twisted mockeries of the living. In simple terms, the game isn't going to appeal to everyone - then again, since when has any game been able to appeal to everyone?

People of various ages are getting hooked on "Plants vs Zombies". It's easy to understand and very simple to play, making it the go-to game for children and adults alike.
