And although the docks have mainly moved further out of the city, massive amounts of goods still arrive in Liverpool to be trans-shipped to other parts of the UK.
Liverpool has been established for more than 800 years, and it celebrated this anniversary in 2007 by being named a joint European Capital of Culture. This was used as a catalyst for the redevelopment of major parts of the city centre, although many of the grand buildings which were constructed from the money the city earned from its days as a major port still survive.

Tourism brings approximately 1.3billion into the economy of Liverpool every year, and the citys retail landscape has been substantially transformed in recent years to cater for these visitors. The creation of the Liverpool One shopping district in 2008 marked the culmination of several years transformation of the citys retail facilities, which has helped Liverpool regain its position as one of Englands biggest shopping destinations.

John Lennon International Airport, south-west of the city centre, receives regular daily flights from the international hub of Amsterdam, and these ensure that cargo reaches the city in a timely manner from all parts of the world. A well-developed road network also means goods can be shipped onwards to any part of the city quickly and easily.
