Tree Topping A Bad And Unhealthy Tree Service

Tree Topping A Bad And Unhealthy Tree Service

By:

Topping refers to the indiscriminate cutting of the tree branches, done with the purpose of shortening a trees height. Sometimes when a tree becomes large with branches extending out to the roads or neighbors property, homeowners opt for topping or heading off the tree. However, topping is not a viable answer for shortening a tree and is one of the worst ecological practices.

Topping is in fact considered illegal in many parts of Oakland, Hayward, El Cerrito, Albany and San Leandro. Here are some reasons why tree topping is harmful and should not be practiced:

Faster Growth - As mentioned above, harsh pruning practices are often adopted to shorten a trees height. However this has an opposite effect on the tree. The tree gives rise to latent buds or water sprouts that are far more in number than normal new buds. These buds elongate rapidly to compensate for the topped off branches and leaves. Therefore, the tree not only becomes larger at a fast pace, but also develops a dense foliage.

Starvation - Topping involves removal of large branches and often eliminates 50 100% of the leaf bearing crown of a tree. Since leaves are the food factory of a tree, removing them keeps the tree starved and devoid of all nutrition. To make up for this loss, the tree activates latent buds forcing rapid growth of multiple bud/sprouts below each cut. This is a sort of survival mechanism which the tree adopts, so it can grow new leaves as soon as possible. If proper tree service is not administered at this time, the tree will be seriously weakened and might die.

Insects and Disease Proper pruning involves making a cut just beyond the branch collar, the point where the branch is attached to the tree. Such wounds are quickly healed and cause minimal damage. However during the process of topping, large lateral cuts are made causing considerable damage to the leaves, branches and tissues of the tree. The chemical released by the wounded branches attracts insects and other organisms, making the tree highly vulnerable to disease and insect invasion.

Sunburn A fully grown tree has multiple branches and thousands of leaves on it, which absorb the sunlight keeping the trunk cool and dark. However when most branches and leaves are cut off, the trunk of the tree is suddenly exposed to harsh light and high temperature. This can cause severe damage or sunburn in the tissues beneath the bark.

Expensive - Topping is a tree service that will need to be done frequently, as it increases the growth rate of a tree. Also topping can completely ruin your trees structural appearance and you will need to hire licensed arborists to give it a proper shape. Since topping exposes the wood to insects and fungi, the tree can become diseased. Thus you will need to spend on a tree care or tree removal service.

Drop in Property Value Topped trees look unhealthy and ugly, and can actually decrease the value of your property. Without leaves & dense foliage, a tree appears disfigured and injured. A topped tree can never fully regain its natural beauty.
Topping poses a serious threat to the health and safety of your tree, and can actually make a tree more perilous in the long run. Invest in a tree trimming service rather than getting it topped off, and enjoy the beauty that comes with the natural growth of a healthy tree!
