The Role Of Ladies Aprons In Modern Society

By:

Ladies aprons came into existence long back when we were ruled by the kings and queens of royal lineage. Although the royalty had beautiful and costly clothes to wear, the people who waited on them had to be content with just the average looking dresses. This apparel was made from common fabric which was durable and affordable but not too fashionable. The common man had work to do and could not escape from the stains that the household chores brought on. In order to protect her valuable clothes from being soiled, she had to put on an apron in front which could shield the clothes within and keep them from being stained. Thus began the journey of this piece of clothing.

As a Protective Garment

Although ladies aprons began during the period when kings and queens ruled over us, these garments are still in use today for the same reason. They help to protect the better clothes within. You can see that most of the other kinds of apparel have evolved or changed dramatically over the times but not the apron. It is mainly used by people when working in the kitchens today. Since the beginning, these clothing were used as a separate covering over the main dress. It was not connected to the main dress in any way but was designed to complement the main garment.

To be worn when needed

The reason why the ladies aprons were worn separate was that the women could just put them on when they started work and then take them out after they completed it without disturbing the main dress. Besides, it was not very easy to launder the dresses in those days as it was both costly and it also reduced the durability of the garments. Thus, these pieces of clothing were just put on when the need arose to protect the more fashionable dress underneath.

When to Wear Them

In the days gone by, the ladies aprons were also worn while going to the market, to a meeting or the church. Various styles differentiated the aprons from each other. One type is well known as the pinafore. This has shoulder padding and looks more like a jumper dress. But with time, clothes have slowly become more affordable and so people are opting to wear less costly clothes at work which means that they are gradually leaving the aprons behind. You will more often find people working in kitchens, restaurants and similar places to be wearing this apparel.

Types
Among the many kinds of aprons found today, tuxedo, bib, bistro, waist and cobbler aprons are more popular. The classification is mainly based on the design. Body sized clothing with strings to draw at the sides and nape are called bib whereas small ones which can be wrapped around are called bistro and waist. On the other hand, if you want a cape-like covering then you need a cobbler one. You will also find church leaders wearing religious aprons more commonly called cassocks. Therefore, the role of ladies aprons has evolved over the times and they still serve as very important and necessary garments.
