Although most of the daffodils and many of the tulips are now over, there is still a wealth of other bulbs to enjoy at this time of year. Late flowering tulips are among the most exciting, both in color and shape. Parrot tulips produce superb buds, with the petals tightly wrapped around each other, before opening to reveal sumptuous, full bodied flowers, with streaks of secondary colors.

One of the best of all the late tulips is the blue heron, which is not blue at all but more a warm lilac. The single late queen of night, a mysterious shade of dark purple verging on black, is a great performer, whether it is grown in a formal bedding scheme, a cottage border or a container. The tall qualms from North America, also known as Indian lily or American bluebell, are useful for sunny borders or grassland. The flowers may be blue or white, and both forms associate well with the last of the daffodils.

At the front of a sunny border anemone hybrids will make a real splash of color with their brilliant red, white or blue flowers. Cheap and cheerful, they are also suitable for containers. For best results, just remember to soak the tubers overnight before planting. Meanwhile, alliums provide rich colors, from white to lilac and purple, and they will be joined by shapely Dutch irises, in beautiful shades of purple to gold and yellow.

Dutch irises or sapphire beauty combines a sumptuous mix of deep blue and gold and looks splendid beside the dusky poppy. Tulip blue parrot grows to 55cm or 22in and is a full bodied, lilac blue tulip, which flowers at the same time as blue forget me knots, red or purple aubrietia and purple or rose colored wallflowers. In maturity, its large blooms are sumptuous, and make perfect cut flowers for a table decoration.
