The Singapore Marathon is an international marathon that takes place every year on the first Sunday of December in Singapore city. The contest is an International Association of Athletics Federations Silver Label Road Race. Since its inauguration in 1982, the competition has grown many folds in its popularity and at present more than 50,000 join the run every year. It is indeed one of the key highlights of the countrys sports calendar and it aims to be Asia's topmost competition.
The contest is sponsored by the Standard Chartered Bank and organized by the Singapore Sports Council. In 2011, the race will take place on December 4th. For those who take part in the marathon, there are as many as four categories to the competition: the full marathon, the half marathon, the 10km run, and the 10km wheelchair race. In addition there are also team competitions for 10km and a wide range of short distance running competitions for young participants.
The event is scheduled to have three different start points and running routes for the 10km run, the Half Marathon and the Full Marathon. The routes wind through the many beautiful landmarks of the country as well adding more beauty to this whole running experience.
Though the marathon is mainly for fund raising for various charities, the participants will have the opportunity to not just experience the marathon though they are not professional runners, it will also build team spirit, improve strategy and planning abilities of the participants as they are not just running but also relay and team work building in the competition.

And will cater to enthusiasts of all ages and levels. It is expected to be a hit among families and groups of friends who will paticipate just for the fun of running and taking part in the event.
