Renewable Energy Is A Clean Solution To A Very Dirty Business.

Pollution and the subsequent global warming is thought to be the most dangerous threat to humans. Has the threat caused by the population explosion been disregarded? The estimated world population is currently seven billion. This figure is projected to double in the next fifty years. The human population has been growing exponentially over the years and has finally reached a time where important resources are beginning to deplete.

Human resources have all initially come from the environment. Over time technological developments have created a lifestyle which has suited humans and made our lives extremely easy. Over-consumption and greed are wasting these resources.Packaged foods, nuclear power, plastics, oil, pollution and land development have become a way of life. However, while we are living in the life of luxury, the environment is suffering.

The environment has already suffered long term damage. Scientists have reported holes in the ozone layer and animals and plants are becoming extinct. However they still believe the short term damage can be dealt with and maybe ever reversed. Over time the environment may eventually recover. The challenge remains that the planet has not yet been given the chance to recover as the global population dramatically increases. This is where the concepts of conservation and preservation may contribute.

As humans live at the top of the predatory hierarchy we tend to consume more and pollute more than other species. Water pollution, air pollution and deforestation are all contributing factors which are slowly killing off the world around us. These actions can and must be prevented and remedied. Humans have the technology. The human mindset needs adjustment. Human beings have the tendency to be lazy, apathetic and generally regards themselves as the most significant entities in the universe. This way of thinking must be discarded. This can be done by discontinuing the problematic course of action and substituting it with an environmentally friendly way of life.

Why is the environment collapsing around us? Our natural resources have been disregarded and not correctly prioritized. An estimate of the current extinction rate of species of flora and fauna is one thousand a year from the destruction of the forests. Scientists expect this number to rise to ten thousand a year and by 2020 we may have lost a fifth or more of all existing plant and animal species. Plants and animals are also finding it hard to deal with our destructive lifestyles.

Eighty percent of all marine pollution comes from human activities on land. According to Scholastic Update, five major sources of ocean pollution are: runoff from land 44%, air pollution 33%, shipping 12%, dumping wastes 10% and offshore oil production 1% although this percentage figure may have risen recently after the Gulf disaster. Among other resources, the world has reached its limit in crop harvests, and is declining in animal species, rain forests, top soil, fish stocks, and fresh water.

Renewable energy is the solution. Hydroelectric power, solar power and wind power can replace the burning of coal and oil while recycling can replace land clearance. The health of this planet depends on it. If humans continue to treat this planet with such disrespect, humans will be alone on this Earth suffering from starvation and poor health while fighting for the few remaining natural resources. What a horrible way to leave the world to our future generations.
