Launched in 2003 and held annually since then the Chinese Festival of Arts is among the three cultural festivals hosted at the Esplanade Theaters on the Bay to celebrate Singapores multi cultural heritage.

The festival showcases the talents of outstanding local artists of all genres from Singapore and the region who are given the opportunity of introducing their work to an appreciative audience. Combined with the Chinese New Year celebrations the ten day festival presents a program of theater, dance, music and visual arts devoted to various forms of artistic expressions.

In 2012 the visual arts component will showcase wood block cuts, paper sculptures and shadow puppets to celebrate the year of the dragon and an imaginative and unusual exhibition of Chinese ink works in addition to a display of various ink painting methods as a medium of communication and innovative modern sculptures. A series of community workshops has also been planned.

A selection of talented musicians will showcase the best of local music combining the traditional with new compositions, Singapore and Taiwanese pop, Asian jazz, modern interpretations of classical Chinese music and soaring movie music of Tan Dun presented in a lavish multimedia movie inspired production. The dance segment will feature modern dance interpretations of classical themes.

The highly anticipated theater component will comprise of a popular comedy from Taiwan based on the dying art of crosstalk, a modern take on Nobel Prize winning author Gabriel, Garcia Marquezs novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, presented by artistes from Hong Kong and Singapore and a Kun opera master from Souzhou. The play is entirely without dialogue only accompanied by images, sound and video art. The Esplanade Theater will also host several productions for young audiences and a gritty Mandarin version of Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolf.

A host of exciting free programs is expected to enliven the proceedings. The huge repertoire includes dragon dances to usher in the Year of the Dragon, festive music performed on Chinese wind and percussion instruments by Chinese orchestras including dance performance & Chinese acrobatics, traditional Chinese tales told through puppetry, outdoor sing-along, pop and jazz performances, screening of Chinese movies, opera and storytelling, in fact something for everyone.
