Is The Drug War Our Next Frontier

By:

The war on drugs has intensified in recent years and in my opinion has surpassed the war on terror as the premier problem that we face today. The effort to control our southern border with Mexico is a big part of this problem and can be listed as a separate issue because the two are closely intertwined but if we were able to seal off our Southern border we would be able to control the drug trade and all other crimes associated with people crossing back and forth illegally. The problems of illegal immigration and human sex trafficking are just as serious and the Mexican Border isnt the only place where drugs are smuggled into the US but it is the most significant.

Anti-drug strategies have long been a major concern of United States law enforcement agencies as well as the military and the foreign office. In spite of all of our efforts the US has the second highest drug arrests rate in the world. The problems and crime related to drug trafficking in the US continue to grow and eat a large portion of our money and resources. The costs related to all aspects of the drug trade are staggering. If we can bring this problem under control our economy would experience an immediate boost in our own economy.

The DEA has made a large number of massive drug busts and arrests this year, the largest of which was a recent operation which resulted in the arrests of nearly 2000 criminals. Most of these belong to a Mexican drug cartel by the name of La Familia Michoacana.

Drug smuggling is such a problem because it is so profitable. There will always be willing smugglers and drug mules. As long as there are drug users there will be dealers willing to take the risk and grow or manufacture the drugs. Drug smugglers are so clever at finding ways to outwit authorities that they will always come up with a solution.

Drug cartels are building submarines which transport large amounts of cocaine underwater. They are also beginning to transport their drugs to Canada and flying them across to the US using small hops across the border.

Despite the best efforts by immigration authorities and the border police, a steady stream of unregistered aliens slip into the US every day. Many of them are desperate enough to risk everything for their American dream and end up making deals with drug dealers in exchange for passage across the border for themselves and their loved ones.

These immigrants act as 'mules' for the drug gangs, smuggling quantities of cocaine, marijuana, cannabis, heroin and other drugs into the country. They use their own bodies as containers for the substances, going under the knife so that drug agents can fill their stomach cavities with bags of these substances. Many of them also die in the process, as sometimes the drugs leak into their own bodies.

The thing which alarms me about the latest drug busts is that the quantities of illegal drugs confiscated have been huge. If drug smugglers are willing to risk such huge quantities of drugs in each haul they obviously are having a lot of success. Each one of the confiscated loads is a small percentage of what makes it through to the market of users here in the United States. Military Ring Express
