After January 1st, I bet a lot of people made New Years resolutions to drop those extra pounds and get fit this year. And usually, before the end of the month, the majority of people will have either given up on that goal altogether, or they will have taken some serious backslides in their quest to lose weight. If you have fallen off pace with your weight loss goals or you feel the need to get back on track in some way, then you will want to read further.

Here's how you can lose those extra pounds and get fit this year:

1. Have a realistic goal in mind.

It's nice to want to lose as much weight as you possibly can. It's another to go overboard and expect too much, too soon. A lot of people set a lofty goal for their weight loss and then they feel overwhelmed by having to stick to that diet plan. And then they backslide when it seems like they just won't hit their target weight. Make your goal to lose weight inspiring, while at the same time, doable. You don't want to sabotage yourself by trying to do too much, too soon.

2. Bring a friend into it.

Having a friend or a partner in your weight loss goal can help to keep you on track, especially on those days when the last thing that you want to do is to make the right decisions in regards to exercise and eating properly. If your spouse joins you, or you can get a good friend to tag along with you, all the better. Your chances of hitting your weight loss goals will be greater than if you do it alone.

3. Give yourself some fun.

One of the things that can easily knock you off course is to try and go too hardcore with your weight loss goals and deny any and all fun things to try and reach them. If every once in a while, you want a reasonable snack, go for it. If every once in a while, you need an extra day off from your exercise routine, then make it happen. Just don't allow yourself to have too much fun and lose sight of your weight loss goals altogether.

4. Whatever you do, don't follow the latest fad diets.

This alone can really propel you to losing that weight and getting the kind of body that you always dreamed of. The fad diets, they come and go so often, and it happens for a reason. You need to focus more on a way of eating and exercising that you can keep up with as part of your lifestyle.
