Flexible Liners In A Koi Pond: A Popular Option Nowadays

By:

Flexible liners are a popular choice for koi ponds. They are available in a range of materials, the most popular being butyl rubber sheet. Although many PVC liners are reinforced, they are not as flexible as butyl rubber, generally only half the thickness and have a relatively short life expectancy.

Butyl sheeting is extremely strong and flexible and normally guaranteed for 20 years. It can be welded, making it ideal for formal pond designs. Be aware that when installed in an area with a high water table, a liner may float.

A liner pond needs a concrete collar and make this before digging the main hole. It should be strong enough to take the weight of any wall that may be built on top of it. Depending on the design, it may be necessary to fold the liner over this collar.

If so, use a smooth faced material to shutter the inside edge of the trench. This will reduce the risk of the liner being punctured by the rough edges of the concrete. The liner also needs protection from sharp objects in the ground to prevent puncturing and loss of water.

Specialist underlay is available, but if you are planning a formal shaped pond, you could use polystyrene sheeting at least 2.5cm thick. Join the edges of the sheets with a suitable tape to prevent movement while the liner is laid in position.

The filter chamber and main pond need to be linked by a trench that will carry the bottom drain pipe under the collar. Take care when breaking through to prevent the collapse of the side wall or collar.

Some designers prefer to concrete the drain and its pipe into a channel while others make the whole of the floor a concrete slab. The advantage of the second method is that the pond can be upgraded to a block built pond later by building off the slab. The bottom drain is already in situ.
