Fine Wines And Sensational Sunsets

By:

The island of Santorini is typically Greek with narrow winding streets, rugged coast, clear blue waters and square white houses with blue domed roofs. However, holidays in Santorini have that added extra; some of the most stunning sunsets you are ever likely to see anywhere in the world.

The best place to view them is in Oia on the edge of the volcanic caldera, looking out over the sparkling Aegean Sea. The trip up to the caldera is somewhat interesting and certainly not for the feint hearted, with steep roads and sheer drops down the cliff face, however the views along the way certainly help to take your mind off it.

At the top it can be quite a scramble for the best view point and its best to arrive early if you want to eat or drink here. The roof top bars and terraced restaurants soon fill up with tourists keen to get the best views and photo opportunities.

There were plenty of locals here too, a sure sign that no matter how many times you see the sun set, you will never get the same image twice. The vibrant pinks, dazzling yellows and burning orange colours fill the blood red sky, as everyone looks on in silence.

Donkeys with neck bells carry tourists up and down the steep pathways all day long and you soon become used to the sight and sound of them, however making the journey on foot may be more tiring but stopping to admire the stunning views makes all the effort very much worth while.

If you're looking to soak up some sun on the beach then you've got to head down the stone steps to the small coves below, you can also take a boat trip over to nearby Thirasia from here. There are some larger beaches just around the coast to the north.

Santorini is also well known for its aromatic white wines. The Assyrtiko grape grows perfectly in the dry volcanic earth here, producing a dry white wine with hints of citrus and containing minerals from the volcanic soil. Dessert wines are also produced here, are called Vinsanto, and can be naturally sweet or fortified; they must be aged to be appreciated to their fullest for at least two years. The aromas of chocolate, apricots and crme brulee with a soft velvety taste are definitely worth the wait.

A visit to a vineyard has to be part of your holidays in Santorini to appreciate these fine wines at their best.

The island is quite affluent making
cheap holidays to Santorini
hard to come by, however selecting your board option carefully could help keep control of your budget; self catering or bed and breakfast will give you the opportunity to experience the Greek hospitality whilst keeping control of how much you spend.
If you visit during early or late season you may find a better selection of cheap holidays to Santorini available, the resort will also be quieter and you might just get the best spot to watch the sunset!
