Essay Writing Tips

By:

It does not matter whether you are still in high school or if you are taking night classes at your local college in between working two jobs: at some point, you will almost certainly be called upon to write an essay, and if you are not proficient in this vital skill, you will have unending difficulties.

The first thing to know about writing an essay is what exactly an essay is. An essay is any piece of writing that is used to express the authors point of view on a subject. This means that you are trying to express what you think about something.

Essays are different from reports, which are factual in nature and express the facts about something. A topic for an essay might be your favorite sport, while a report might be about the geology of the sun.

One of the most common beginner mistakes in essay writing is to write about the facts alone. In an essay, facts are used to support your point of view or to provide context. Your opinion is what really counts.

Before you begin writing, make sure that you have an outline ready to guide you as you write. Many students hate outlines, but the outlining process makes a little more sense if you think about the outline as your roadmap: it tells you where your essay is going.

No one would set out from Chicago on a trip to the Rocky Mountains without some sort of directions to tell them where they are going, and when you are writing an essay, it should be no different. Your outline does not have to be anything fancy, but it should summarize your main points and give you some sort of idea of what each of those points will contain.

Okay, now you are ready to start writing. Pull up that new Microsoft Word document or sharpen your pencil, and get started. Use your outline often as you write. Do not try to use flowery phrases and big words to impress your teacher; it will not work.

Write as clearly and concisely as you can. If your essay seems like it is going to be a little bit too short, do not go back and pad it by adding useless sentences that contribute nothing to what you are going to say. Instead, go back to your outline, think of something meaningful, and write.

In essay writing, as in many other things, the way to become good is practice, practice, practice. Write often and soon you will be writing well.
