Dissolved Oxygen In A Koi Pond. Points To Look At

By:

Koi prefer higher rather than lower water temperatures to ensure that their immune and digestive systems are running as close as possible to optimum level. When the water temperature is about 24 degree Celsius, they eat well and any external skin damage heals quickly, particularly when all the other water parameters are good.

However, it is also the case that the higher the temperature, the less oxygen the water can hold. This is significant because koi require large quantities of dissolved oxygen in their blood to help them digest their food properly. If temperatures rise too high, the fish will naturally reduce their intake of food.

But this is not the only reason for ensuring that there is enough oxygen in the pond. The biological filter also requires sufficient oxygen to ensure that aerobic or oxygen loving bacteria continue to flourish and are able to break down fish waste efficiently. Oxygen is absorbed from the atmosphere into the water at the water surface.

When slightly stocked, this natural action will supply sufficient oxygen to the pond. If overstocked or if the air temperature is high, then additional aeration may be necessary. Provide this with venturis or air pumps to keep the level as close as possible to saturation. Water can hold varying amounts of oxygen according to its temperature.

Saturation level is at its highest when the water is cold and least when it is warm. Koi can survive in water with oxygen level as low as 5mg/l, but at this level they appear listless. As the available oxygen increases, they become more active and less stressed. Koi will naturally swin in and out of waterfall drops and venture streams.

However, if they gather around a waterfall for any length of time, it is because they detech that this is the most oxygenated water in the pond.
