It is a poor, sweltering, landlocked tract of South America with only 6m people, many of

For the past 61 years it has been in the grip of the world's longest-ruling party, the Colorados, first under the kleptocratic dictatorship of General Alfredo Stroessner and then under his only slightly less grasping civilian acolytes.
It is not surprising that it took a man who might have walked off the pages of a Greene novel to end Colorado misrule. Fernando Lugo, who takes office on August 15th, was at the time he won the presidential election in April still technically a Catholic bishop (the

All of these fascinating forms will be displayed in tall glass showcases lined with a satiny Nile-green fabric that along with a steel-framed mirror and matching console table suggest an elegant boudoir. On one of the countertop racks will be pairs of Victorian-style drop earrings made in silver with turquoise and amethyst paste bows from Maria Merola's own design. At Merola the process of selecting a piece to wear home, perhaps an abstract Bakelite pendant on a snake chain, is enhanced by Maria Merola's willingness to educate her customers as well as to hunt for that special piece.
Entering Butler & Wilson's jewelry emporium on South Molton Street (London's luxurious shopping mall), is like walking into a planetarium, a dark, cavelike space with glimmering constellations of paste jewelry exhibited in showcases that usually attract the public three deep. This is the domain of Simon Wilson and features mainly new designs, including yards and yards of paste necklaces in all the colors of the rainbow, heavy pins in the shape of swords with jeweled hilts or in this store's version of the diamante lizard pin - the perfect adornments for spring suits.
Mr. Wilson's partner, Nicky Butler, supervises the second and more sedate location on Fulham Road, where he oversees the designer workshop above the attractive store. Here Butler & Wilson feature not only antique pieces and the dashing new designs, but also old beads and other elements reworked into contemporary pieces inspired by the good proportions of old jewelry.
