Chewing And Barking. Certain Points To Remember

Short term close confinement also teaches the dog that occasional quiet moments are a reality of domestic living. Your puppy dog is extremely impressionable during her first few weeks at home. Regular confinement at this time soon exerts a calming influence over the dog's personality.

Remember, once the dog is house trained and calmer, there will be a whole lifetime ahead for the dog to enjoy full run of the house and garden. On the other hand, by letting the newcomer have unrestricted access to the entire household and allowing her to run, she will most certainly develop a bunch of behavior problems in short order, no doubt necessitating confinement later in life.

When confining the dog, make sure she always has an impressive array of suitable chew toys. Kongs and sterilized long bones, both readily available from pet stores, make the best chew toys, since they are hollow and may be stuffed with treats to heighten the dog's interest.

Remember, treats do not have to be junk food and they certainly should not represent extra calories. Rather, treats should be part of each dog's regular daily diet. Some food may be served in the dog's bowl for breakfast and dinner; some food may be used for stuffing chew toys.

I regularly stuff my dog's many Kongs with different shaped biscuits and kibble. The kibble seems to fall out fairly easily, as do the oval shaped biscuits, thus rewarding the dog instantaneously for checking out the chew toys. The bone shaped biscuits fall out after a while, rewarding the dog for worrying at the chew toys.

But the triangular biscuits never come out. They remain inside the Kong as lures, maintaining the dog's fascination with hew chew toy. To further focus the dog's interest, I always make sure to flavor the triangular biscuits by rubbing them with a little cheese or freeze dried liver.
