Acne Scar: Can This Be Prevented?

Acne Scar: Can This Be Prevented?

By:

There are few skin conditions that are so troublesome, and yet so prevalent as - Acne.

"How do I get of Acne" is the cry of teenagers - of whom 85% are afflicted by this skin problem .

It becomes natural to look at the Dermatologist as the teenager's best ally during these years. For the afflicted young man or woman - acne scars are the big concern - and rightfully so. Acne scarring has robbed many a teenager of his / her self-esteem and self-confidence.

And yet as common as it is - there are still many misconceptions about this problem.

• Washing • Stress • Sun • Diet

Washing:

Ironically - excessive washing will not help - and can actually irritate the skin further - and make the situation worse.

The washing should take the form of gently scrubbing with a mild cleanser - and not overly warm (hot) water.

It has never been made completely clear to teenagers that washing will not help - and sometimes can actually aggravate the condition by further irritating the pores. For example, a washcloth can add irritation to the already inflamed areas. This condition of Acne is not caused by dirt.

Stress:

In the activity and demanding lives of many teenagers - stress is a constant companion - and may promote acne. However, a good treatment can often nullify the effects that stress can have on the skin. Handling stress without undue inner conflict will not only benefit the acne, but lays a good foundation for later years.

Sex:

This may well be unacceptable news for parents, but to date there is no clear evidence of a link between sex and acne.

But, consider: Higher levels of androgens (male sex hormones) can cause an increase in the sex drive - and those same high levels can be related to more severe case of acne. Thus, the question of the chicken and egg: which causes the other?

Sun:

In the short term - sun may actually hasten the clearing of the acne irritation - and this can happen while reddening the skin. But, by reddening the skin - you are actually creating skin damage. That is sun burn. So, ignoring the false band aid approach of reddening the skin - thereby possibly masking the appearance of acne - the sun exposure can make the acne worse.

But, everything in moderation: Some exposure to the sun is fine - just don't use it as a alternative for acne treatment.

Diet:

This is really up for grabs. There is no reliable evidence which shows conclusively a link between diet and acne. This includes French Fries, Chocolate, and pizza! Although there is no conclusive evidence of linkage between diet and acne - we are all different. Diet may impact one person, and not another. Here you have to use your own experience as a guide.

Acne Scars:

This is the area of real concern. There is the specter of physical scarring, and emotional scarring. Too many of our teenagers have been scarred physically, and that is often accompanied by feelings impacting self-confidence and self-esteem at a time of life when those things are of the utmost importance.

There are benefits of knowledge - per above. But, acne treatment is enormously important, and not to be dismissed.

Our teenagers are too important not to take advantage of new discoveries and treatments.

Acne should not be taken lightly!!
