There are many criteria that you could use to rate the strength of an Army. Size is important but it is not all important. The biggest army in the world is useless if its troops are poorly trained, motivated, and equipped. We have seen this as evidenced by the US war in Iraq in the early 1990s, in Vietnam, and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. I look at all of these factors collectively when making this evaluation. Sometimes size is more important, but any military must be well equipped and motivated to be effective. I am not ranking these military organizations in any type of order. Im just listing them in one collective group as the best in the world.
The best military in the free world is the US military. They are the best for several reasons. The first is the superior technology that the US posses. Our troops always enjoy the very best weapons and equipment of any other military force in the world. US troops are tough but they are not the toughest troops when you compare them to other militaries. Our Special Operations are as tough as Special Ops troops anywhere else in the world but the bigger advantage that they have is that they are well trained and intelligent. US troops are capable of independent thought and action. The rank structure is centralized but individual troops are given a lot of latitude when they have to carry out orders. In short they can think. Their minds are also weapons. The US military is also large and troops are well motivated. Since it is an all volunteer force combat troops are combat troops only because they have chosen to be. This insures that the most highly motivated troops are chosen for the job. These are the major factors which make the US military the best in the world.
The Chinese have the next best military in the world. Their primary strength is the large size of their military. It is by far the largest in the world. They are not the best equipped military but they are tougher, better disciplined and well trained. Any war with the Chinese military would be against a formidable force. Their major weakness would be the centralization of their command. Individual troops are not given the latitude to make critical decisions.
The British military is comparatively small but extremely well trained, equipped, and motivated. The Brits enjoy the best technology in the world along with the United States and a highly motivated military. They could easily defeat military forces which are much larger but their size is their biggest disadvantage.
The military forces of the Republic of Korea are some of the toughest and best trained troops that I have ever seen. They are highly motivated because their primary worry is defending their homeland against North Korea. They have very good weapons and are well equipped. They are also well motivated. I believe that they can hold their own against any military in the world.
The Korean Peoples Army of North Korea is a large and tough military force. It is effective mainly because of its size and the toughness and ruthlessness of its troops. They dont have the latest technology but the weapons and equipment that they have are very good.
The Russian Federation has some well trained and tough troops. The biggest problem that they have is that they are too centralized. Troops obey orders to the letter and are not allowed or expected to think. Their Special Operations troops are the toughest in the world in my opinion. Many of them are killed in training each year because their training conditions are so tough.
The Israeli Defense forces are a very well trained, tough, and highly motivated force. Their training and technology are superior to most armed forces, but their size is their biggest disadvantage.
The French Armed Forces are also well equipped and trained. Once again the biggest disadvantage here would be their small size when they are compared to other military forces.
