Learning your next language is always a great idea. English and Spanish are almost equally spoken in the US. How many times
do you hear messages in English translated into Spanish? This is just one of the reasons why learning Spanish is a good idea.
Yet there are a lot of people who experience difficulty with a new language. If you have trouble learning languages, here are
a few tips to help you out:
If you want to become fluent quickly in a new language, immersing yourself in it for a time is an effective method. There
would be no faster way to get fluent in Spanish, for example, than to spend time in a Spanish-speaking nation. In parts of
the United States, you could easily immerse yourself in Spanish by simply spending time in certain cities. Usually what this
means, however, is traveling to another country so that you are not able to simply switch back to your own language when it
is convenient. The effectiveness of immersion is hard to deny, and some people say it's the only really good way to learn
another language. For some, however, this puts too much pressure on them. It's up to you whether or not this is the way you'd
like to learn.
A good technique is to actually have the Spanish names for everything in front of you; you can use tags or stickers with the
words written on them. You can do this both at home and work, if it's practical. This is a way you can immerse yourself in
Spanish vocabulary by seeing the words and what objects they go with. Don't risk confusing different words; this can be quite
embarrassing! Imagine someday trying to communicate and using the word for bathroom when you wanted to ask what was for
dinner! The reason this method of tagging works is that your mind immediately begins to think using the new language rather
than your native one whenever you look at the labeled items.
Try reviewing your vocabulary by using flashcards. Flashcards are indeed a familiar but very effective way to help you
remember things. Simply remembering what words mean is really what a large part of a language comes down to, and this method
helps you do that. With flashcards you can quiz yourself on vocabulary and grammar and tenses. Flashcards are usually pretty
small so you can take them with you when you leave the house and work on your Spanish in your spare time. You can also have
someone quiz you. The process is extremely simple -on one side of the card, write the word in your own language; on the other
side, the same word in Spanish.
Study the language with the intent of making the whole process as simple as possible. In fact, many people choose learning
Spanish as their first foray into other languages because it is supposed to be pretty easy to learn. There are so many
different language courses, programs and systems available today. What works for someone else might not work for you. Just
keep trying different learning techniques until you find one that "clicks." If your goal is to speak Spanish fluently, just
keep at it and don't be impatient, and you will gradually get there!
