Fighting The Drug Cartels

By:

The violence of the drug cartels located near our border with Mexico has escalated to tremendous proportions in recent years. The scariest thing is that the cartels have no problem kidnapping and torturing policemen. They have many law enforcement officials on their payrolls and will threaten or extort money from them if they feel that it is necessary to get what they want. This is a situation which is totally untenable and I dont see where it will change at anytime. The best action that they United States can take at this time is to seal our southern border so as to prevent the violence from spilling over to US soil. It is imperative that we do so before the problem takes root on our side of the border.

- In the April 29, 2011 issue of The Week magazine, an article described how sixteen police officers were arrested and connected to the killings of 145 fellow Mexicans. The police were accused of providing protection for the actual killers who are suspected of being from the Zetas, Mexico's most violent drug cartel. The 145 victims were bus riders who were kidnapped and then killed when the probably refused to join the cartel as gunmen or drug carriers.

The article reports that over 15,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico just in 2010. Serious stuff when innocent people are given the choice of either joining a criminal gang or being executed.

- A May 15, 2011 Associated Press report told how at least 27 Guatemalans were killed by assailants who in addition to killing them also decapitated most of the bodies. Police believe that these killings were related to a 2008 ambush of an alleged Guatemalan drug boss by the Mexican Zetas drug cartel. In that attack, the Zetas allegedly killed eight other people.

This activity is viewed as the Zetas' attempt to control international drug operations, not just Mexican drug operations. The key word here is the word international. This word brings the land area of the United States into question. I submit to yiu that we should not hesitate to use our military to control this area because of the ruthlessness of the cartel members.

- A May 26, 2011 Associated Press article reported that a gun battle between two rival drug gangs in a Mexican city left 29 people dead. The article reported that the gun battle took place along a highway and the scene was littered with fake military uniforms, bulletproof vests, hand grenades, and thousands of rounds of ammunition. The fact that they were able to get fake uniforms and equipment indicates to me that they are getting some high level help. This shows that the Mexican Government is unable to keep this problem under control or to get some type of handle on it.

We have an asset of the tens of thousands of U.S. troops currently stationed around the world that are serving no strategic or military purposes we need these troops here instead of over there. It would save us money to bring them here because they would be paid the same amount that they make now. The benefit is that we would save untold billions of dollars on the logistics required to maintain and transport our personnel and equipment back and forth. This would give us some much needed help with preventing problems from spilling over our borders without costing extra in the long run. The untold domestic savings would also be tremendous.
