muscle Weighs More Than Fat And Other Fitness Myths To Leave Behind In 2011!

By:

Its a New Year and time to leave some well worn, but untrue, fitness myths behind. There are many myths that have been around so long and have been repeated so often, that many people regard them as fact, but they have no grounding in science. Ive listed out the Top 5 Myths that I hear so often.
What fitness myths have you heard? Feel free to share with me on my Facebook Page, Transcendent Wellness, or my blog The FitChick Blog! I would love to hear your thoughts!

Myth #1: Muscle Weighs More than Fat

Muscle tissue does NOT weigh more than fat tissue. A pound of one thing equals a pound of the next thing-always. Ten pounds of muscle weighs exactly the same as ten pounds of fat, ten pounds of feathers, or ten pounds of whatever. They all weigh ten pounds! Muscle tissue is smaller, tighter, and takes up 3x less space in the body than fat. Muscle tissue takes up less VOLUME in the body but it doesnt WEIGH any less than fat tissue. THATs the key point you need to remember. A 150 pound woman with lean muscle tissue and low body fat will have a very different looking body, and will wear a smaller size in her clothing, than a 150 pound woman with high body fat.

Myth#2: High-fructose corn syrup is worse than table sugar.
Processed sugar is processed sugar and too much of ANY of it will wreak havoc on your waistline and your health. Your body cant tell much difference between the cheap high-fructose corn syrup and more expensive forms of processed sugar. Cutting as much processed sugar as you can out of your diet is one of the smartest things you can do to lose weight and improve your health.

Myth #3: Low-fat processed foods are healthy.
Ummmmnot so much. Low-fat foods often replace fat with other ingredients that are just as unhealthy or unhealthier. Fat typically makes food taste better and once that is removed, companies must put something in there to make the product edible (aka CHEMICALS). Eating foods that are higher in fat, but natural, are MUCH better for your body. Add healthy fats like those found in avocados, nuts, fish and olive oils into your daily eating regimen.

Myth # 4: Organic is always better than nonorganic.
For the most part, the difference between organic and nonorganic produce is the use of pesticides. Foods with permeable skinssuch as apples and strawberriesare better to purchase organic. Foods with impermeable skinssuch as bananasare safer to buy commercially since very few pesticides are used.

Myth #5: Food eaten after 8:00 p.m. is more likely to be stored as fat than food eaten earlier in the day.
Heavy sigh. There are many die-hard folks that believe this myth, but it is just that-a myth. The time of day that you eat food does not affect weight. What does affect weight are the KINDS and AMOUNT of food consumed, combined with the level and amount of physical activity. Bodies store excess calories as fat regardless of what time the clock may say. The mere fact of eating something after a certain time of night will not in of itself cause you to gain weight.
