~Grave’ Matters Around the World

Death. A word that evokes fear, anxiety and usually, silence. Most people don’t like talking about it. However not everyone fears death nor keeps mum on the topic - in other countries, death is treated differently.

Here are a few ways death is observed in other cultures & faiths:

Tibetan’s Sky Burial - when a person dies in Tibet, the body is cut up into small pieces and is oefed” back to nature. When I say fed, it means having vultures eat it (if the ceremony is done in a mountain or an area with vultures) or fed to fishes. To them it is completing the cycle of life. Although it has been discouraged since China took over Tibet, there are still areas where this is in practice. Even the bones are smashed to smatterings.

Hindu’s Blow to the head - in Hindu belief, a blow to the head is dealt on the dead person for its soul to be free. Barbaric yes, but since they’re dead, I’m sure they won’t be complaining about this.

Professional Criers - this one I saw during a recent trip. The family of the deceased person hires professional criers who - you guessed it - cry throughout the wake. They do this in batches. It’s a practice rooted in the belief that even if you have no money when you visit the wake, you can show your condolences by crying. Trivia: it’s not enough to cry, there are 16 traditional crying melodies and one has to train for 5 years before becoming a professional crier. Mind you, those aren’t tears from putting mentholated oil near the eyes - those are real tears. That’s one job I’m not exactly interested in getting.

Cryonics - did you know that as of 2007, there have been 150 people already in some form of preservation where the body’s natural decaying process is delayed - other wise known as cryopreservation. This in the hopes that in future there is a way to resurrect the dead. The stuff of science flicks.

Chick on a coffin - no it’s not that kind of chick. In some Asian countries, a little chick is placed on the glass of the coffin whenever the deceased one’s death is caused by a crime. It is said that every peck of the chick is felt by the criminal.


Jazz Funerals " this occurs in New Orleans Louisiana(home of American Jazz), and originates from African spiritual practices. The jazz funeral begins with march, where the band plays somber dirges or hymns. After the final ceremony, there is a change in tone and the music becomes more upbeat " happier actually " and a dance is performed on the way out. It’s a pretty cool way to say good bye to life " with both sad & happy notes to it.

A family member of a good friend died - I guess that’s why I’m all about death lately. Unlike other people though, I don’t fear death - although I fear HOW I’ll die. How is death treated in your place? Leave a comment!
