According to a report from the world health organization, more than 60% of the people of the world drink polluted water and most of them suffer from water borne diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, dysentery and typhoid fever. So, use of water filters is very important to purify water for drinking purposes and to reduce the chances of being affected with water borne diseases. Some historians believe that they were first used about 4,000 years ago and since then they are being improved to remove impurities and germs more effectively.

Two aspects of water filters are very important to make water fit for drinking. First is to remove impurities from water such as dust particles, heavy metal ions and other chemical compounds especially urea and its derivatives. Second is remove most of the viruses, bacteria and fungal spores from water by use of chlorine or any other anti-septic chemical compound. They are also used to clean water for bathing purpose because impure water contain many carcinogenic compounds which can enter in the body and cause cancer. Several compounds in impure water cause allergy and a number of skin diseases.

There are many types of water filters, each having some characteristic features making it different from the other. First type is known as charcoal and it makes up about 95% of the total filters used in the world because it is cheap, effective, easy to install and very simple to use. In second type the process of reverse osmosis is used to remove all the chemicals out of water and a fine membrane is manipulated for this purpose. In third type, electricity is applied on electrodes to ionize water and separate it into alkaline water and acidic water. Alkaline water is used for drinking and acidic water is used for purpose of bathing.
