Musk oils have been around for quite a while and have a sensual aroma which characterizes them. They are known by their soft sweet signature fragrance. There are various types of musk oils but you will always know how to categorize musk oil when you smell its aroma.
The original musk oil was scraped from the musk glands of several different animals such as the civet and the musk deer. In modern times this practice has been discontinued because of the inherent cruelty to the animals that the musk is derived from. Musk oils are mainly produced synthetically but there is no doubt in my mind that somebody somewhere is using the same old techniques to gather the scent needed to produce the fragrance compound. Some perfumers are purists and will not settle for anything less than the original ingredients.
Musk was the original name given to the odiferous substance extracted from the gland of the male musk deer. Believed to have aphrodisiac properties, musk was used extensively as a fragrance fixative until the late 1800s, when economic and ethical concerns drove the development of a synthetic substitute. Natural musk was used in perfume-making as late as 1979, when the musk deer was protected as an endangered species by the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES). CITES continues to regulate the amount of natural musk that can be traded, but illegal poaching of the musk deer continues to be problematic.
White musk is the name given to the class of synthetic molecules that replaced natural (animal) musk in perfume-making. White musk has been in use since the late 1800s. White musk is used to produce many of the different named musk perfumes. The best selling white musk that we called is called Arabian White Musk oil. It seems that the customers who prefer this musk oil dont really like to use a different type. Another product that we really sell is called Egyptian Musk. Customers who use Egyptian Musk seem to prefer it above all other brands also.
White musk is the name given to the family of synthetic musk used in modern perfume making. White musk is described as clean and skin-like and is immediately recognizable when used in contemporary fragrances. There are three classes of white musk. They are; aromatic nitro musk, polycyclic musk compounds and macrocyclic musk compounds.
Nitro Musk was first produced in the late 1800s whenAlbert Baur accidentally discovered it while trying to develop a more effective form of trinitrotoluene. After the first nitro musk (musk Bauer) was discovered, similar nitro musk was created, including musk ketone, musk xylene, musk ambrette, and moskene.
Polycyclic musk is musk have more than one ring in their molecular structure. It became popular after World War II when they replaced nitro musk. Polycyclic musk was often used to scent laundry detergents and went by the chemical names of galaxolide, tonalide, phantolide, celestolide and traesolide. In the 1990s, it was discovered that polycyclic musk was potentially harmful because it could disrupt cellular metabolism.
Macrocyclic musk is derived from plants. Leopold Ruzicka first synthesized the compound in small amounts in 1926, but macrocyclic musk was not produced commercially until the late 1990s because it was difficult to manufacture cost effectively. Most people cant even smell the scent of macrocyclic musk.
Musk is also used as a base fragrance for many other scented oils. I have found that it helps fragrances which would be weak without it to have a longer lasting aroma. I have found that it seems to mix best with the oriental and flowery fragrances. I urge you to try this scented oil fragrance if you havent already. You might be in for a wonderful surprise.
