Advantages To Solar Power

By:

Many of the advantages to solar power are obvious. The environmental advantages alone are enough to justify giving serious consideration to using solar power. There are the less obvious advantages also; solar systems require very little maintenance, a solar system will provide uninterrupted service when public utilities are experiencing outages, a solar system will provide power in remote areas where public utilities are unavailable and, after set up, the ongoing cost of solar power is very minimal.

The environmental advantages to solar power are many and obvious. Solar power produces absolutely no ongoing pollution. There may be some produced during the manufacture of the panels and batteries but there is no ongoing pollution after that. Solar systems consume no fuel of any kind except sunlight to produce power.

Solar systems require very little maintenance. Once your system is set up, keeping the electrical connections clean and free of corrosion, and cleaning the surface of the panels occasionally is about it. Maintaining your batteries is also a matter of keeping the connections clean and is a pretty simple affair.

When your neighbors are putting up with power outages due to weather conditions, overloaded power lines, or for any other reason, you will have an uninterrupted power supply. There is a sense of security that comes with having your own power supply that you control and cannot be turned off by a power company for any reason.

If you live in a remote location, solar power may be your most viable option for power. Generators are expensive to buy and expensive to operate. A solar system will provide you with power any time the sun shines and will store that power in batteries that can be used at times when there is no sunshine. A back up generator can be useful for times when you use more power than your batteries have stored, but you should not have to run it often.

The cost of a solar system can vary widely depending upon your needs. A basic system can be installed for less than $500.00 complete with panels, batteries, charge controller, and inverter. This system is adequate for a small house or cabin to run lights, computers, and other low amperage appliances. If you just have to have your microwave oven or air conditioner, you will have to run a generator when you use them or plan on spending a lot more on your solar system. Even if you have to spend several thousand dollars on your solar system, you will still be ahead in the long run because it is a one time expense. Unlike paying an electric bill every month, once you have bought your system, there is almost no expense in its operation. All it requires is sunlight and sunlight is free.

The advantages to solar power are far too many to list in a short article such as this, but I hope I have given you reason to consider some use of solar power for yourself. Even if you do not want to convert your whole house to solar, anything you can use solar power for means that much less you will have to pay the Electric Company and that is a good thing (unless you are the Electric Company). Remember the advantages to solar power; low environmental impact, very low maintenance, it is reliable, it does not cost much to get started and you can add to your system and build a sizable system over time.
